This five-part series, made by the team behind the award-winning series The Genius of Photography, tells the story of design from the Industrial Revolution through 20s modernism, the swinging 60s, the designer 80s and up to the present day. Features interviews with star designers like Philippe Starck and creatives from Apple and Ford; as well as design fans like Stephen Fry.

by Kibardin Design is made from 374 dowels, placed which is precisely placed one to another to provide a comfortable seating ergonomics.

Vers 2x

iPod dock by Vers Audio. This Cherry Wood speaker is made from 100% recycled materials.

Tailored Wood

by Yael Mer and Shay Alkalay. Production technique similar to that used in the clothing industry is applied to furniture. A pattern is generated and when assembled, the resulting void is filled with foam. Just as a suit is altered to fit the client, the furniture is custom made and adapted to fit the user be they tall, short, skinny or fat.

Nordic Light

Candle holder by Jonas Grundell lets you play with random versatility of candle arrangements.

Loops

Designed by Nina Jobs. This coat stand is produced using bentwood technique. It features three joined wood components that rises up before it splits into three diverse circular shapes. Made from ashwood for both the stand and the base.

Titikaka Bench

by Naoto Fukasawa for B&B Italia. Teak lathes with an aluminium frame defy the traditional shape of an outdoor bench.

Boolean

by Torafu Architects. Made for a cafe space for University of Tokyo.

Myrkr Chair

Myrkr chair by Christopher Warren. In Myrkr, the modern fabrication techniques have been combined with traditional assembly methods. The lounge chair has no metal connections, but rather is made from a single laser-cut sheet of 12mm plywood and 144 dowels. It has been dipped in black aniline dye and finished with lacquer.

The medals of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games are casted from re-used circuit boards, laser engraved with a unique pattern based on a large master artwork of an orca whale by Corrine Hunt, a Canadian designer of Komoyue and Tlingit heritage. The form factor represents the landscape of Vancouver.

The medals of the Vancouver 2010 Paralympic Winter Games are a superellipse, or squared circle.
