Perforated House by KUD

Kavellaris Urban Design (KUD) is an Architectural practice based in Melbourne, Australia with an interest in architecture as an intellectual and philosophical construct. KUD was founded on ideas that are materialized and translated into an architectural language – to KUD, this is a critical conversation in which urbanism is constructed.
KUD describes the project as “a critique on our cultural attitudes and how we determine them, on what we consider to be of heritage significance and how to narrate such ideas in a critical and contemporary manner”.

The house is situated between a row of single fronted Victorian terraces and a double fronted Edwardian house. KUD’s strategy was to reveal that this demand and attraction of such a housing has a stronger link with romanticized nostalgia rather than of good design. In an attempt to break down the ornamental façade which dictates the neighborhood character, the Perforated House aimed to redefine boundaries, particularly environmental sustainability through solar orientation.
